The Gift of Learning

"These are the commands, decrees and laws the LORD your God directed me to teach you to observe in the land that you are crossing the Jordan to possess, so that you, your children and their children after them may fear the LORD your God as long as you live by keeping all his decrees and commands that I give you, and so that you may enjoy long life. Hear, O Israel, and be careful to obey so that it may go well with you and that you may increase greatly in a land flowing with milk and honey, just as the LORD, the God of your fathers, promised you.
Hear, O Israel: The LORD our God, the LORD is one. Love the LORD your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength. These commandments that I give you today are to be upon your hearts. Impress them on your children. Talk about them when you sit at home and when you walk along the road, when you lie down and when you get up. Tie them as symbols on your hands and bind them on your foreheads. Write them on the doorframes of your houses and on your gates."  Deuteronomy 6:1-9

Every day is a chance to learn something new or different.  We are explorers and should be grateful for the oppurtunities to be able to expand our minds through schooling, books, other people, communities, etc. (not to mention the ever expanding world wide web)  This gift is not always easy to come by and many take for granted the words and historys we have access to.

Learning is an important part of finding out who we are and who we want to be.  The bible has given us a simple and easy outline in Deuteronomy 6:4-9.  It states we must Love the LORD your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength, impress them on your children, talk about them when you sit at home & when you walk along the road, when you lie down & when you get up, tie them as symbols on your hands and bind them on your foreheads, and write them on the doorframes of your houses and on your gates.  These simple tasks tach future generations the importance of God in their lives.  It aides in developing their mind, heart, and soul as they grow up to hopefully pass them on to their children and their children's children.

Wisdom and knowledge are given day to day.  It is our job to pay attention and hone in on even the slightest life lesson.  It may not come in the way or form of what we thought.  Continuely listen to advise and make sound judgments based on our Lord and not our own ways.  Let us diminish in foolishness and determine to be wise-know that we are not perfect but if we become more accountible and responsible, those choices will be righteous and powerful; because we learned from them.

"Trust in the LORD with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make your paths straight.  Do not be wise in your own eyes; fear the LORD and shun evil."  Proverbs 3:5-7

On our journey of learning here are some questions to consider:
  • When it comes to learning from Jesus are you paying attention?
  • Are your eyes really open?
  • Are your ears really listening?
  • Are your hearts and minds open to receive God?
  • Are you ever just too busy???
  • What are some things you would really like to know about?
  • Why is it so hard for us to learn from other people’s mistakes?
    • If someone told you that the flame on a candle was hot and that youcould burn yourself; would you have to find out for yourself?
   For must of us Probably!
    • If all of our friends ran off a cliff; would we run and follow right after them?
Hopefully Probably Not!
